What's so weird about this? I spent a summer with a Forest Service seismograph crew running a 8 pound sledge hammer with a impact switch hitting a square foot iron plate on the ground every few feet. The geophones recorded the impacts on a Bison Seismograph machine. We were looking for water tables, possible gravel pits and the slope stability.
